Take Technology Into Your Own Hands

April 22, 2008

I headed into Washington, D.C. last week, relying on my GPS navigation system to carefully guide me. Apparently, Emily, my trusty navigator, didn’t account for the Pope’s parade route. Suit jacket in hand, I booked it an extra 12 blocks and made it to my appointment five minutes late.

My technology woes were only intensified after reading about a charter bus that had a run-in with a tunnel. The GPS system didn’t account for the bus’ height.

I’m not only talking about GPS though. As a generation that thrives on technological advances, we are always getting further and further ahead of ourselves. We are decision makers and solution finders. We’re resourceful, we find ways to use new technology to make our lives more efficient.

Tech-savvy is one thing, but when did we start to blindly accept technology? Better yet, when will we stop?

Take some time to do things old school,

  • Edit a paper with a red pen, not track changes.
  • Make a phone call, give your typing fingers an e-mail break.
  • Grab a map and decide your own route.

We should all have a handle on the technology we use. We need to understand how it fits into our lives, not how our lives fit in with our technology.
