Stress Free is the Way To Be
April 15, 2008
April showers bring May flowers and for those of us in school, April also brings finals and the near end to another school year. April, in other words, is the perfect time of the year to stress out. It’s convenient that April is also Stress Awareness Month.
The time has come to embrace the stress in our lives and do something about it. Because, gasp it will only continue as we head into the real world. So here are some things to do the next time you want to rip your hair out and throw your computer out the window.
1. Figure out what you’re really stressed about. Are you not organized? Do you wait until the last minute? Zone in on your problem area and define exactly what it is. This will help you formulate the proper plan of attack to combat that stress.
2. Make to do lists. I love them. I write up a to do list everyday and I would even use a dry erase board. Sure, I got made fun of, but it helped me focus throughout the day. They are a visual way to see what you have to accomplish. I even found that as soon as I had everything written down that I became less stressed. It was more the anxiety of trying to remember everything than actually doing it all.
3. Get plenty of rest. Some of us are starting to pull all-nighters with coffee, Red Bulls and anything else that helps us stay awake. None of which allows us to get the sleep we need to wake up refreshed, thinking clearly and ready to get things done. Aim to get six or eight hours a night.
4. Take breaks. You may think that sitting at your computer or at your desk for hours at a time will lead to absolute productivity — it doesn’t. We get distracted, lose our concentration and real motivation. Leave your work area for a few minutes. Walk around. Have your own dance party. Do something to give yourself a mental break.
5. Be positive. Your mood affects what you do. Maintaining a can-do attitude will help you cross things off your list. It’s also beneficial because not only do you get things done, but you believe that you can. Nothing is worse than thinking there is no end in sight.
There are countless other things to do when you’re feeling stressed. It’s better to learn what works for you now rather than later when the stakes are higher. Hopefully these tips will help you enjoy at least a little less stressful month of April.
What other techniques have worked the best for you?
